Clinical Significance of Sarcopenia
Beom Jae-Won

Abstract
Sarcopenia is associated with various chronic and senile diseases, and aging. With the international consensus on the diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia and the official recognition of sarcopenia as a disease, the significance and value of sarcopenia have gained attention worldwide. In addition to primary sarcopenia in the community, sarcopenia that is closely related to underlying diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and fragility hip fracture is of great clinical importance. Sarcopenia is associated with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, and an increase in muscle mass can improve the insulin sensitivity of the body. The elderly with type 2 diabetes had more accelerated muscle loss and decreased strength than those without diabetes. In patients with cancer, sarcopenia not only increases morbidity and mortality but also leads to poor treatment outcomes. Hip fracture is a representative fragility fracture and is the most deleterious disease related to sarcopenia. The prevalence of sarcopenia is known to be high in patients with hip fracture. If the clinical characteristics of sarcopenia are understood and multidisciplinary exercise and nutritional intervention to manage sarcopenia are effectively applied, the quality of life and survival of the elderly will be improved.
